1920: Glacier Schoolhouse
Located about 7 miles south of Crested Butte along Highway 135, the Glacier Schoolhouse is a historic rural landmark in Gunnison County's upper valley. It was stablished during the pioneer boom of the late 19th century, the Glacier Schoolhouse was designated as Gunnison County School District No. 16. It served the children of local ranching, homesteading, and mining families living in the Glacier area along the Slate River and Gunnison River corridor between Gunnison and Crested Butte. Like many isolated high-country schoolhouses of that era, it operated as a single-room school where a single teacher taught multiple grade levels until school district consolidations in the mid-20th century.

1880: Gunnison's First Newspaper "The Gunnison News"
The first newspaper published in Gunnison proper was The Gunnison News, which printed its premier issue on April 17, 1880. It was founded by Frank A. Root and Colonel Frank T. Luse.

1874: First Settlers in Gunnison
One of the first groups of settlers ever to arrive in the Gunnison country came one year after Sylvester Richardson's initial band of 1874. In late June of the following year, 1875, Richardson led another group in. This party had gathered in Colorado City in the spring of that year and then made their way with Richardson across the divide and into the new county of Gunnison.

1874: Wagon Road to Lake City
The 1874 road from Saguache to Lake City—officially known as the Saguache and San Juan Toll Road—was built by Otto Mears (the "Pathfinder of the San Juans"). It served as the primary gateway into the San Juan Mountains during the silver boom, opening up southwest Colorado to miners, freight haulers, and settlers.
